Tanzania to host 4th WMO international climate prediction workshop, 1st for Africa

Dar Es Salaam, June 25, 2026 (Xinhua/NAN) Tanzania is set to host the Fourth World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) International Workshop on Operational Climate Prediction (OCP-4) from June 29 to July 2 in the northern city of Arusha.
The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) said in a statement on Thursday that this marks the first time the event will hold in Africa.
Organised by WMO in collaboration with the TMA, the event underscores Tanzania’s growing reputation for technical expertise and institutional capacity in advancing climate prediction and services.
The workshop would gather around 90 experts from across the globe to explore how scientific climate data can be transformed into actionable insights for stronger decision-making, improved preparedness, and more resilient communities.
According to the statement, OCP-4 will discuss ways to enhance prediction outputs, tailor products to user needs, and support anticipatory action in climate-sensitive sectors.
It said the workshop is aimed to address the full value chain of climate prediction from data production to decision-oriented services.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) applications would also feature prominently in the discussions.
The OCP series began in India in 2015, followed by Spain in 2018 and Portugal in 2022.
The upcoming edition marks the first time the event would be held in Africa, the TMA added. (Xinhua/NAN)
