Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has seen his contract with the Nigerian Football team extended following an extensive meeting with the National Sports Commission, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Franco-Malian tactician was hired in January 2025 on a two-year contract that was set to expire at the end of 2026. While he didn’t achieve the delegated task of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there’s no disputing that the Super Eagles have improved under his tutelage.

Chelle helped Nigeria to an unbeaten run at the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco and has now been handed an improved deal as a reward for his excellence.

Chelle petitioned for an improved contract after winning a bronze medal at the AFCON, but the situation wasn’t attended to by the Nigerian Football Federation at the time.

Now, NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has announced that the contract of the former RC Lens defender will be extended. Alongside, he’ll take charge of the Nigerian U-23 team, with the sole aim of guiding the team to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“I can confirm to you that we have reached a new term with the coach. We are going to increase his money and also take care of his assistants who are helping him. nd there are other benchmarks that we have put on the table, and I’m sure the coach will be very excited about it,” Dikko said.

“We have also discussed how we can build for the future. In that aspect, we also agree with the coach and the NFF that the coach should take care of the U-23 national team.

“So, Eric Chelle and his team, plus other people who will support them. The objective is not to give the coach more work but to start building for the future,” the NSC Chairman concluded.

Eric Chelle’s first task would be to swing the Super Eagles into a strong start at the AFCON 2027 qualifiers starting in September.
