The milestone was commemorated at the company’s 10th Anniversary Gala themed “10 Years Strong – Powered by People, Driven by Purpose,” where founder/CEO Ebele Enunwa reflected on a decade-long journey defined by bold vision, operational excellence, and enduring value creation across communities nationwide.
At a time when Nigeria’s economy increasingly relies on resilient indigenous enterprises, Sundry Markets has emerged as a clear model of sustainable, homegrown success.
Founded in 2015 with a single store in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Sundry Markets has grown into Nigeria’s largest indigenous grocery retail chain, demonstrating the power of vision, execution, and adaptability.
“Ten years ago, Sundry Markets was only a dream. Today, Marketsquare has become a household name across Nigeria,” said Founder/CEO Ebele Enunwa.
The company’s growth trajectory underscores its extraordinary expansion: 2015: 1 store in Yenagoa; 2020: 15 stores nationwide; 2026: Over 40 stores across Nigeria; Current footprint: 41 stores in 19 cities across 15 states.
Reflecting on its unconventional starting point, Enunwa added: “Many asked, ‘Why Yenagoa?’ My answer was simple—why not Yenagoa? Every community deserves access to quality living and so it didn’t matter to me where we started, only that ‘we started.’”
Over the past decade, Sundry Markets has evolved into a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economy, driving employment, strengthening local supply chains, and enabling inclusive growth.
Key contributions include: over 4,000 direct jobs created nationwide, partnerships with 900+ suppliers, supporting local businesses, serving over 2 million customers monthly, and operating across more than 50,000 square metres of retail space.
“From a handful of employees to thousands, Marketsquare has served millions, created jobs, and raised the bar for grocery retail in Nigeria,” Enunwa noted.
Board Chairman, Engr. Charles Odita emphasised the broader impact saying “Our contribution goes beyond retail. We have strengthened local economies, empowered businesses, and created opportunities that improve lives across the communities we serve.”
Sundry Markets’ journey has been shaped by resilience—navigating infrastructure challenges and an evolving business environment.
“In the early days, power supply could not sustain our systems. But we learned, we adapted, and we grew,” Enunwa recalled.
This adaptability has enabled the company to consistently evolve, delivering modern, clean, safe, and customer-focused retail environments that set new benchmarks across the industry.
Established to address critical gaps in Nigeria’s grocery retail space, Sundry Markets has redefined what customers expect from modern supermarkets.
“An industry that refused to modernize, where standards were ignored, and customers were forced to shop in unreliable conditions. We chose to be part of the solution,” Enunwa said.
Today, Marketsquare is synonymous with quality and affordability, well-designed, world-class shopping environments, and consistency and trust across all locations.
Sundry Markets’ rapid growth has earned global acclaim, including recognition by the Financial Times as one of Africa’s fastest-growing companies.
“This recognition affirms the strength of our vision and the discipline of our execution,” Engr Odita stated.
At the heart of Sundry Markets’ success lies its people-centric philosophy—employees, customers, and communities.
Beyond commercial success, the company has continued to invest in social impact through scholarships and education initiatives, medical outreaches and community programs, support for culture and local development, women empowerment and sustainability efforts.
As Sundry Markets enters its next phase of growth, the company is advancing its Vision 2030 strategy, with a strong focus on innovation, technology, and sustainability.
Strategic priorities include expansion into underserved communities across Nigeria, digital transformation and AI-driven retail solutions, enhanced customer experience and convenience, continued investment in people and leadership development, strengthened commitment to sustainability and renewable energy
“We are building technology-driven solutions that will redefine convenience and create experiences beyond imagination,” Enunwa said.
