With gully erosion and flooding steadily eating into communities across Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Joseph Ikpea has escalated the search for solutions by taking the matter directly to the highest levels of the Federal Government.
The Edo Central lawmaker met with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, to press for urgent intervention to halt the environmental degradation threatening homes, roads, farmlands and livelihoods across Esanland.
The Federal Lawmaker warned that unless decisive action is taken, many communities could face worsening ecological disasters, with devastating consequences for residents and local economies.
During the meeting, senator called for a robust partnership between the executive and legislative arms of government, arguing that the scale of the challenge demands a coordinated response from relevant Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
His latest move comes weeks after he raised the alarm on the floor of the Senate, sponsoring a motion that spotlighted the growing menace of erosion and other ecological threats in Edo Central.
By combining legislative advocacy with direct engagement at the executive level, Senator Ikpea is seeking to fast-track intervention projects and attract critical federal attention to vulnerable communities in his constituency.
The lawmaker maintained that protecting communities from environmental disasters must remain a national priority, stating that unchecked erosion continues to destroy infrastructure, displace residents and undermine agricultural productivity.
Responding, SGF George Akume assured the senator of the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges through collaboration and effective policy implementation.
Akume said the Office of the SGF would continue to coordinate relevant agencies and support initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development and improving the welfare of affected communities nationwide.
