The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as misleading and outdated a viral video circulating on social media alleging the arrest of Fulani men with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu area of the state.
The Command clarified that the video being recirculated was an old clip from an incident that occurred over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command warned against the dissemination of false and unverified security information capable of causing panic among residents.
According to the statement, the recirculation of the outdated video was capable of creating unnecessary fear, apprehension, and tension within the state.
“The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of undermining public confidence and peace,” the statement noted.
The police further warned social media users and content creators against spreading false and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder, stressing that individuals found deliberately disseminating misinformation would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has directed enhanced deployment of police personnel and operational assets to identified black spots, strategic locations, and entry and exit points across the state.
The Command disclosed that the security measures were being implemented in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the continued safety of residents and visitors.
Residents were urged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures had been put in place to protect lives and property.
The police also appealed to members of the public to support security agencies with prompt and credible information on suspicious persons, movements, and activities within their communities.
