Just In: Ex-UNILORIN Vice Chancellor, Ambali, Dies at 68

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has died at the age of 68.

Ambali’s passing was announced by the current Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Waha Olasupo Egbewole.

As contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the academic institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, Ambali, who headed the university from 2012 to 2017, passed away earlier today after a brief illness.

The UNILORIN management described the don’s demise as a huge loss to the university as well as the Kwara State University where he was the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman until his death.

While expressing his condolences with the family of the great scholar and the people of the Ilorin Emirate, Egbewole enjoined sympathisers, particularly members of the UNILORIN community to attend the Janazah for the late ex-Vice Chancellor at his Oloje Housing Estate, Ilorin.

The event is slated to hold by 4pm today.

The statement read; “The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has announced the death of the 9th Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, OON.

“Prof. Ambali, who headed the University from 2012 to 2017, died earlier this morning after a brief illness. He was 68.

“The death of Prof. Ambali, according to the Vice Chancellor, is a huge loss not only to the University of Ilorin and the Kwara State University, Malete, where he was Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman until he breathed his last, but also to the entire nation and humanity.

“Prof. Egbewole, who has sympathised with the family of the great scholar and the people of the Ilorin Emirate, enjoined sympathisers, particularly members of the UNILORIN community to attend the Janazah for the late ex-Vice Chancellor at his Oloje Housing Estate, Ilorin, by 4.pm.today, Saturday,June 6, 2026.”
