Jimoh advances as 2026 CBN Open Tennis Championship serves off

JOSEPH Jimoh has advanced to the second round of the men’s singles at the ongoing 2026 CBN Open Tennis Championship after defeating Musa Mohammed 6–3, 4–6, 7–5 in a hard-fought opening-round encounter on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the match, played at the Tennis Complex of  Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, saw both players battle through fluctuating momentum.

With Jimoh taking the first set 6–3 before Mohammed responded strongly to level the contest with a 6–4 second-set win.

The deciding set remained tightly contested, but Jimoh held his nerve in the closing stages to clinch a 7–5 victory and secure passage into the next round.

Jimoh will now face the winner of the second-round clash between Saidu Sani-Inabo and Samuel Akagha as the competition progresses.

In other men’s singles first-round matches, Canice Abua defeated Nuhu Urenyang 6–2, 6–4. Abua will meet Musa Sani in the second round after Sani overcame Kater Kpum 5–7, 6–4, 6–4.

Dahiru Muhammed also progressed after a 6–3, 6–4 win over Ruby Toba, and will face the winner of the match between Charles Olom and Sunday Chinedu.

Chima Michael defeated Mathew Abamu 7–5, 7–6(0), while Yau Sani beat Elisha Kwange 3–6, 6–1, 6–2. Mubarak Ganiyu also advanced after a 6–4, 7–5 win over David Edward. Michael will face Yau Sani in the second round.

Other results saw Yahaya Sani-Inabo defeating Ayomiposi Agboola 6–2, 6–2, while Thomas Otu beat Isaac Danjuma 6–0, 7–5 to set up a meeting with the winner between Abdulbasit Salami and Joshua Maxwell.

Emmanuel Michael recorded a 6–1, 6–1 win over Aminu Ibrahim, while John Otu defeated Abdulsalam Muhammed 6–2, 6–7(7), 6–1.

Abayomi Phillips overcame Rashet Mamud 6–3, 6–2, and Daniel Adeleye beat Yohanna Yakubu 6–1, 6–4.

Mevi Drimiya defeated Seyi Ogunsakin 6–7(2), 6–3, 6–1, while Paul Egena edged Alpha Ahli 6–2, 6–7(1), 6–4.

In the women’s singles match, Success Ogunjobi, who recently won back-to-back titles at the 2026 NASCO/ITF J30 World Tennis Tour Junior Championship in Abuja, defeated Bunmi Are 6–0, 6–0 in the round of 32.

Ogunjobi will face Gloria Samuel in the round of 16. Samuel advanced after a 6–0, 7–5, 7–6(1) win over Jesutoyosi Adewusi.

Toluwase Agunbiade beat Destiny Tomizayi 6–3, 6–4, while Mary Udofa defeated Omotayo Ibrahim-Jatto 6–0, 6–0.

Blessing Otu overcame Emmanuella Kelvin Bebe 6–1, 6–3, and Nenrot Suwa defeated Emmanuella Kwange 6–1, 5–7, 6–4 to reach the round of 16.

NAN reports that the tournament featured men’s and women’s singles and doubles events, as well as wheelchair tennis competitions.

The  47th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-sponsored Senior Tennis Championship began on Friday   , with qualifying matches,while the main draw commenced on today ( Monday). The tournament is expected  to end on Sundsy  in Abuja .

NAN reports that Michael Emmanuel and Adesuwa Osabuohien emerged champions in the men’s and women’s singles categories respectively at the 46th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Senior Open Tennis Championship in Abuja.(NAN)
