At least two soldiers and a police officer have been killed during an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) quarters in Kuru area of Plateau State by suspected gunmen.
The gunmen reportedly attacked the premises on Monday night, killing the security officials during fierce fire exchange.
The midnight attack was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the NIPSS Head of Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel.
According to Osime, the gunmen were repelled by the security agencies who have since commenced investigation over the attack.
NIPSS however allayed concern over the safety of its staff, residents of the quarters and the facilities of the institute, stressing that normal activities have seen resumed at the quarters.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled.
“Security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.” He said.
Osime however reserved comment on the reported killing of the security personel, stressing that investigation is still ongoing over the atttack.
“As investigations are ongoing, it would be premature to speculate on the nature, scope, or outcome of the event.
“The Institute is therefore unable to confirm details currently circulating on social media and other unofficial platforms.
“NIPSS is working closely with the appropriate authorities and will provide verified information as soon as it becomes available.” He said.
The NIPSS spokesperson urged members of the public and the media to rely on official communications from the Institute and relevant security agencies.
