Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit North Korea on Monday, drawing attention to one of the country’s most talked-about military assets. Ahead of the visit, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been highlighting what is being described as one of the most powerful weapons in his arsenal—a newly developed destroyer warship.

Kim Jong Un Inspects North Korea’s New Destroyer

According to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, leader Kim Jong Un recently inspected the 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon, where various military and capability tests were being conducted. The warship is considered one of the most advanced vessels in North Korea’s navy.

Designed to Carry Multiple Missile Systems

One of the ship’s key features is its advanced Vertical Launch System (VLS), which is designed to carry and launch multiple types of missiles. Reports suggest the vessel can be equipped with both ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, making it a major addition to North Korea’s naval capabilities.

Built for Multi-Domain Warfare

North Korean officials say the destroyer is designed to engage threats both on the sea surface and underwater. The vessel is intended to support a wide range of military operations, including anti-ship and anti-submarine missions.

Advanced Detection and Underwater Combat Capabilities

The Kang Kon destroyer reportedly features modern sonar and detection systems that can identify underwater threats. State media claims the ship can serve as a command hub for operating underwater weapons and tracking enemy submarines in surrounding waters.

Upgraded After a Major Launch Accident

The vessel suffered significant damage during its initial launch attempt at Chongjin Port in May last year. Kim Jong Un reportedly described the incident as a case of “criminal negligence.” After repairs and a second launch in June, the ship underwent extensive upgrades, including stronger armor protection, improved air-defense systems, and advanced anti-aircraft weapons.

Part of a Bigger Naval Expansion Plan

North Korea has indicated that the Kang Kon destroyer is only the beginning of a broader naval modernization program. Under a new five-year defense plan, the country aims to build additional destroyers of the same class and is reportedly working on plans for even larger 10,000-ton warships. The move is part of Pyongyang’s efforts to strengthen its military and expand its naval capabilities.
