The US Supreme Court has temporarily protected access to the abortion pill mifepristone across the United States, allowing women to continue receiving the medication through telehealth services and mail delivery while court proceedings continue.
The ruling pauses an earlier lower court decision that sought to restore stricter rules on how the drug is distributed. Those restrictions would have required patients to visit healthcare providers in person before obtaining the medication.
The case focuses on policies introduced by the Food and Drug Administration, which expanded access to mifepristone during the COVID-19 pandemic. The FDA had allowed certified pharmacies to distribute the pill and permitted prescriptions through online medical consultations.
Mifepristone, used together with misoprostol, has become one of the most common methods of abortion in the United States. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, medication abortions have increased significantly in several states.
With the latest emergency order, the nation’s highest court has ensured that the current access system remains in place for now. Patients can still obtain the medication through telemedicine appointments and mail services as legal challenges continue.

Reports indicate that conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito opposed the decision, arguing that abortion regulations should be left to individual states following the Dobbs ruling.
The lawsuit was filed by Republican-led states, including Louisiana, which challenged the FDA’s authority to ease restrictions on the drug. Pharmaceutical companies Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro later asked the Supreme Court to intervene after a federal appeals court backed tighter controls.
Supporters of abortion rights praised the temporary decision, saying it protects healthcare access for women, especially those living in rural communities or states with strict abortion laws. Critics, however, continue calling for tighter regulations and additional reviews of the drug’s safety procedures.
Although the ruling keeps abortion pill access available for now, the broader legal battle is still ongoing, meaning the issue could return before the Supreme Court in the future.
