Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has spoken on power rotation in Nigeria, saying the southern region should be allowed to complete its turn in national leadership.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the former minister of transportation said leadership in the country has often moved between regions and should continue in a fair way.
In an interview with Trust TV, he pointed out that former President Muhammadu Buhari spent eight years in office, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently serving, adding that the South has not fully completed its own share in the arrangement.
Amaechi added that while he does not fully support zoning arrangements, he believes rotation should still be considered in the country’s political system. He also encouraged others seeking political office to support his position on the matter.
He said, “I do not believe in zoning arrangements, but if I must comment, the South should be allowed to complete its term. Buhari did eight years, Tinubu four years, so the South has not finished its turn.”
He also criticized the administration of President Tinubu over the handling of public funds, saying it is contributing to the economic pressure facing Nigerians.
He said the economic situation is affecting citizens across the country as well as state governors. According to him, even though states now receive higher allocations from the federation account, many governors are still unhappy due to rising costs and financial pressure.
