The Lagos State Government has warned against street trading and indiscriminate display of livestock in public places during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
Tokunbo Wahab, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, gave the warning while urging residents to uphold environmental cleanliness and comply with sanitation laws.
As contained in a s statement issued on his official X handle on Monday, Wahab stressed the need for residents to celebrate responsibly without compromising the environment.
He said rams and other animals should not be sold on highways, road medians or recreational spots.
The commissioner maintained that the government had intensified public enlightenment campaigns to encourage proper waste disposal and healthier environmental practices during the festive period.
He advised residents to properly bag waste generated during the celebrations and dispose of it at approved collection points for evacuation by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
According to him, ongoing efforts by the state government and LAWMA to clear refuse across Lagos underscore the importance of environmental cleanliness to public health and socio-economic development.
While acknowledging increased commercial activities during festive periods, the commissioner said business activities must not obstruct traffic, endanger residents or degrade the environment.
He cautioned residents against acts capable of violating environmental regulations, including indiscriminate waste disposal, erection of illegal trading structures and conversion of open spaces into refuse dumps.
“Let me restate government’s resolve to firmly apply regulatory and enforcement measures against contraventions of environmental laws and regulations. I enjoin residents to voluntarily comply with the state environmental laws,” he said.
Wahab added that the government would continue to promote environmental sustainability through sustained advocacy and enforcement.
He also encouraged families and visitors to make use of parks, gardens and recreational centres across the state during the holiday for relaxation and leisure.
