Residents of Ado-Ekiti have raised serious concerns over a persistent and choking chemical smell reported across multiple parts of the metropolis, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
The unusual odour, which residents say is distinctly different from typical refuse or waste-related smells, has triggered fears of possible environmental contamination and health risks. Many described the experience as uncomfortable and alarming.
“It doesn’t smell like something from a dump site. It smells like a chemical. It is really choking,” a concerned journalist said.
The smell has reportedly spread across several areas including Odo Ado, Adebayo, Omisanjana, Poly Road, Adehun, Ajilosun, Iyin Ekiti, New CBN, Ilawe Road, Olujoda, and even extended to Ikere Ekiti and surrounding communities—raising concerns about the scale and possible source of the emission.
Residents are now calling on the Ekiti State Government and the Ekiti State Ministry of Health to immediately investigate the situation. They are urging authorities to inspect industrial facilities, potential illegal production sites, and other locations that may be responsible for the suspected chemical release.
There are also increasing demands for environmental assessments, air quality testing, and timely public communication to prevent panic and ensure residents are adequately informed and protected.
As anxiety grows, many residents hope swift action will be taken to identify the source of the odour and mitigate any potential danger to public health.
