GOV. Abba Yusuf of Kano State, on Friday, said that maternal mortality rate has drastically reduced in the state.
He said that the maternal mortality rate in the state was 1,025 deaths per 100,000 live births as at 2025, but that it has dropped to 570.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor said this while commissioning the Gadon Kaya Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, who later joined the event virtually.
The facility was constructed by the Kano State government with support from World Bank, and Immunisation Plus Malaria Process by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming services IMPACT project.
Yusuf was represented by the Director General, Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Prof. Salisu Ahmad-Ibrahim.
He said that the facility was one out of the 187 facilities revitalised in the state to significantly improve maternal mortality and childhood immunisation rates.
He said the intervention was aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery at the grassroots and bridging gaps in key health indices.
“The aim is to strengthen health care facilities at the primary level.
“We are gathered here to commission this project and ensure that all services that we render at the primary facilities are accessible to the common man on the street.
“This will help us to bridge the gap on all the health indices.
“It is worth noting that Kano state has really recorded successful strides in improving maternal mortality.
“As at 2025, maternal mortality rate was 1,025 deaths per 100,000 live births. Today, we are speaking about 570, which has actually crashed the maternal mortality,” he said.
The governor attributed the success story to the efforts of his government, the partners and the federal government intervention.
“We have seen the reduction of zero-dose.
“Kano state recorded significant success also in reducing the number of zero-dose in the state. We have seen improvement in the coverage,” he added.
Earlier, the Programme Manager of IMPACT, Dr Nura Ganduje reaffirmed the commitment of the project in ensuring that every child receives life-saving vaccines.
He said they would also ensure that every pregnant woman has access to skilled care and every family can rely on a functional and responsive health system.
Ganduje said the IMPACT Project is a strategic initiative of the Federal Government, supported by the World Bank and other partners.
He said that it was designed to address one of the most pressing challenges: “preventable deaths among women and children, especially under-five mortality.”
“Our core objective is to improve the utilisation and quality of immunisation, maternal, child, and malaria services, while strengthening the entire primary health care system.
“In Kano State, this vision is being translated into action through the revitalisation and equipping of PHC facilities, such as the one we are commissioning today.
“We are also expanding routine immunisation services, ensuring no child is left behind and strengthening maternal, newborn, and child health services.
“Through these efforts, hundreds of facilities across Kano are being transformed, bringing quality healthcare closer to communities—especially the most vulnerable,” he said. (NAN)
