Former Anambra State Governor and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reacted to reports suggesting that former President Goodluck Jonathan may join the race for the 2027 presidential election, stating that his focus remains firmly on rebuilding Nigeria rather than speculating about potential opponents.
Obi made the remarks while speaking with journalists shortly after completing his screening in Abuja. Addressing questions surrounding the growing political conversations ahead of the next general election, the former presidential candidate stressed that democracy allows any qualified citizen to present themselves for public office.
According to him, he is not distracted by discussions about who may eventually contest the presidency, insisting that his primary concern is the future of the country and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
“Democracy is about people offering themselves for service and being voted for. I’m not in any way going around looking at who is contesting. I’m concentrating on how to build a better Nigeria,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor reiterated his vision for a united, secure and prosperous nation, adding that inclusive governance must remain central to the country’s political direction. He noted that Nigeria’s constitutional principle of federal character should be properly implemented to ensure fairness, equity and national unity across all regions and ethnic groups.
Obi also expressed concern over the state of insecurity in the country, arguing that the protection of lives and property must become a top priority for any serious administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
“My priority ahead of the 2027 presidential election is to build a united, secure and prosperous Nigeria through inclusive governance anchored on the constitutional principle of federal character,” he stated.
He further lamented the increasing fear among citizens caused by insecurity, kidnappings and violent attacks in several parts of the country. According to him, Nigerians should be able to move freely without fear, while families deserve to live without anxiety over killings and criminal activities.
“Nigeria must become secure enough for citizens to move freely without fear, while families should no longer live in anxiety over insecurity and killings,” Obi added.
