BENIN CITY — The Edo State Government and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have intensified efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery following the graduation of Cohort One and onboarding of Cohort Two of the National Health Fellows Programme in Benin City.
The programme, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Health, attracted government officials, healthcare stakeholders, development partners, traditional and religious leaders.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of the initiative in strengthening primary healthcare services, promoting data-driven governance and expanding access to quality healthcare at the grassroots.
The Edo State Coordinator of the NHIA, Amb. Dr. Ehannire Theodore Osas, commended the Federal Government and the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) Office for implementing impactful healthcare interventions in Edo State.
He highlighted NHIA-backed programmes currently running in the state, including the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric Care initiative, the Free Fistula Programme and the Basic Health Care Provision Fund.
Ehannire also appreciated Governor Monday Okpebholo for creating an enabling environment for healthcare programmes to thrive.
Representing the governor, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, said the programme aligns with the administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritises stronger primary healthcare, improved maternal and child health and expanded access to healthcare services.
She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, for championing the initiative.
The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, described the fellowship programme as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and evidence-based healthcare governance.
According to him, the fellows will support healthcare monitoring, improve service delivery and provide real-time feedback to aid decision-making across local government areas.
Representing the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Omoruyi Iyahen of the SWAp Coordination Office, Abuja, praised the Edo State Government for supporting health sector reforms.
He said the fellowship programme was designed to equip young Nigerians with the skills needed to strengthen healthcare systems and improve grassroots service delivery.
Edo State SWAp Coordinator, Dr. Godswill Omijie, described the initiative as a major step toward bridging the gap between policy and implementation through collaboration and innovation.
Speaking on behalf of graduating fellows, Pharm. Dr. James Abhulimen said Cohort One members contributed to healthcare system strengthening through advocacy, partnerships, community outreach and data-driven interventions.
On behalf of the incoming fellows, Dr. Airen-Ogieva Efosa pledged commitment to improved healthcare outcomes and quality service delivery.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates to graduating fellows and awards to outstanding participants.
