A fisherman in the Iton-Agan community of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area has cried out over alleged constant harassment, intimidation, and unlawful police invitations linked to a man claiming to be the Baale (traditional head) of the community.
In a petition dated May 13, 2026, and addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, solicitors to Mr. Olasimbo Popoola accused Mr. Abiye Akinmuleya of using officers at the Ilado Police Post and Alakija Police Station to oppress law-abiding residents.
According to the petition signed by Peter Adejoh Esq. of Benson Enikuomehin & Co, Akinmuleya “has constituted himself a menace” and allegedly enjoys the support of certain police officers, particularly Supol Razaki Bashiru and one Mr. Eko Paulinus.
The petition detailed that on Saturday, May 9, 2026, Akinmuleya allegedly went to Popoola’s property and caused the destruction of shops under construction attached to the fisherman’s house. When construction resumed on May 13, Supol Razaki Bashiru reportedly intervened to stop the work and issued an invitation to the Area Command at Alakija.
The lawyers had earlier written to Akinmuleya on May 11, 2026, with a copy to the police, warning against interference in what they described as a land-related civil matter.
The petition expressed disappointment that some officers have allegedly become “tools of oppression” in the hands of individuals who can “pay them peanuts,” despite repeated training by police high command.
“The Police have absolutely nothing to do with adjudication on land matters, let alone obstructing and arresting a man constructing shops in front of his house and on his land,” the letter stated.
The solicitors urged the AIG to personally take over the matter, caution the officers involved at Ilado and Alakija, and prevent further harassment. They warned that failure to act may leave them with no option but to seek legal redress in court.
Mr. Popoola, a resident of Iton-Agan community opposite Liverpool Jetty, has faced repeated intimidation for refusing to pay “obeisance” to the self-proclaimed Baale.
