THE Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has urged residents to embrace waste reduction, sorting and proper disposal practices amid operational pressure on disposal facilities caused by heavy rainfall.
Its Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the appeal in a statement in Lagos.
Gbadegesin said persistent rainfall and increased waste evacuation activities had placed significant pressure on disposal infrastructure across the state.
He noted that the development had affected truck movement, turnaround time and operational efficiency at some landfill and disposal sites.
According to him, the situation has also disrupted evacuation logistics for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and sanitation personnel working under difficult weather conditions.
Gbadegesin said the authority was engaging stakeholders and implementing operational measures to improve accessibility and stabilise disposal operations during the rainy season.
He urged residents to support ongoing interventions by reducing waste generation, properly bagging waste and adopting waste sorting practices.
The LAWMA boss explained that sorting recyclable and organic waste at source would reduce pressure on disposal facilities and support sustainable waste management.
He added that the practice would also strengthen Lagos State’s transition towards a circular economy and improved resource recovery.
Gbadegesin assured residents that LAWMA remained committed to maintaining environmental sanitation through collaboration with PSP operators, operational reforms and infrastructure upgrades.
He commended PSP operators, drivers, sanitation workers and operational personnel for sustaining service delivery in spite of operational challenges.
He appealed for residents’ understanding and cooperation, assuring that efforts were ongoing to maintain effective waste evacuation and cleaner communities across the state. (NAN)
