The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State has confirmed that nine people lost their lives and 17 others were injured in a fatal road accident involving a commercial bus and a trailer along the Kankia-Katsina Road.
The state’s sector public education officer, Shamsudeen Babajo, disclosed this in an official statement, revealing that the crash occurred at Kwanar Gidan Mutum Daya at around 8:03 p.m. on Saturday.
A total of 26 persons were affected in the collision, which involved a Toyota, a Hummer commercial bus, and a trailer.
Personnel from the Kankia Unit Command responded promptly after receiving a distress call, arriving at the scene within 23 minutes to begin rescue operations alongside other emergency agencies.
Of those affected, 17 sustained varying degrees of injury including fractures, broken limbs, and deep lacerations, while nine passengers died from the impact of the crash.
Four of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition after the commercial vehicle reportedly caught fire shortly after the collision.
All injured victims were evacuated to General Hospital Kankia for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.
The rescue team also worked to clear the scene and restore the flow of traffic along the route.
The FRSC sector commander extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Preliminary investigations into the cause of the accident have begun, with findings expected to inform measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The command used the occasion to caution motorists against speeding, dangerous overtaking, and reckless driving, particularly during the busy travel period preceding the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
Drivers were also advised to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before setting out on long journeys, while passengers were encouraged to speak up against unsafe driving behaviour.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting road safety across Katsina State through sustained patrols, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
