The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has proposed a new national minimum wage of ₦100,000.
The proposal was disclosed by the Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who said governors are currently consulting with the Federal Government and organised labour on a wage structure that is both fair to workers and sustainable for governments.
According to him, the proposed increase is in response to rising inflation and the growing cost of living, which have significantly reduced the purchasing power of workers across the country.
He noted that state governments recognise the need to improve workers’ welfare while ensuring they can continue to meet financial obligations and deliver critical public services.
“We are actively engaging with the Federal Government and organised labour to arrive at a wage structure that is fair to workers and sustainable for government finances,” AbdulRazaq said.
NPO reports that the proposed wage review comes less than two years after Nigeria approved a ₦70,000 national minimum wage, as labour unions continue to argue that workers’ salaries no longer reflect prevailing economic realities.
Rising food prices, transportation costs and inflationary pressures have intensified calls for a living wage, with many workers saying their earnings can no longer meet basic household needs.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress has continued to push for a comprehensive salary review, maintaining that Nigerian workers deserve wages that can adequately meet current economic demands.
