“Garri sellers please take good care of the garri, it’s humans that are eating it,” he said while showing some of the particles and unwanted materials he reportedly found inside the food item.
Garri remains one of the most consumed staple foods in Nigeria, especially among low and middle-income earners. Many people drink it as a quick meal or use it to prepare eba. Because of its popularity, concerns about the cleanliness of garri processing and packaging often trigger strong reactions online.
Several people have shared similar experiences. Some complained about finding sand, stones, insects, and other dirty particles in garri bought from open markets. Others blamed poor processing methods, unsafe drying environments, and improper storage.
Food safety experts have repeatedly advised consumers to properly sieve and inspect garri before eating or cooking it. They also encourage producers to maintain cleaner processing environments to avoid contamination that could affect public health.
