THE Benue Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, in partnership with Mimidoo Initiative, has organised a debate competition among primary school pupils as part of activities marking the Children’s Day celebration.
The debate with the topic “Promoting inclusion for every Nigerian child’s future is the responsibility of government, not parents” was held in Makurdi.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Theresa Ikwue, the Director of Child Development, Mrs Janet Daagba, said Children’s Day highlighted the importance of children and society’s collective responsibility towards their growth and well-being.
Daagba said the debate competition was aimed at promoting unity, creativity, discipline and cultural heritage among pupils.
According to her, participation in such activities helps to build confidence, communication skills, critical thinking and leadership qualities among children.
She commended the organisers and teachers for preparing the pupils for the competition and encouraged the participants to see the event as an opportunity for learning and self-development.
Five schools participated in the competition, with Saviour Model School emerging first, Wesley School second and Twinkle Star School third.
Kings Court School and Infant Jesus of Paraque came fourth and fifth, respectively.
Announcing the results, Mrs Annas Anzam congratulated the participants and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence. (NAN)
