The Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has declared Wednesday, 27 May and Thursday, 28 May 2026 as public holidays to mark the celebration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid-ul-Adha.
The minister confirmed the holidays on Monday via a statement signed by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the declaration reflects the Federal Government’s respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community in observing the sacred occasion.

While congratulating the Muslim faithful in Nigeria and the diaspora on the occasion, Tunji-Ojo described Eid-ul-Adha as a festival of deep spiritual significance rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity.
The minister added: “The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen.”
He went on to call on citizens of the country to embrace the spirit of brotherhood, unity, and peaceful coexistence during the celebration.
“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” Tunji-Ojo said.
