The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to strengthening strategic partnerships with global institutions as part of efforts to enhance national security and operational effectiveness.
The Army Chief made the declaration while receiving a delegation from King’s College London led by Randolph Charles Kent at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu described the six-year collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the institution as a critical enabler for building intellectual capacity, leadership development, and operational efficiency within the force.
He explained that the partnership, facilitated through the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, has expanded access to world-class military education while supporting the Army’s transformation into a more professional, adaptive, and combat-ready force.
“The collaboration continues to strengthen our capacity to operate effectively within a joint and multi-agency security architecture,” he said.
The COAS noted that evolving security challenges require innovative and forward-looking strategies driven by collaboration, research, and knowledge sharing among military and academic institutions.
He highlighted the strategic role of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre as a key think tank providing policy-driven insights and fostering synergy among security agencies.
According to him, addressing Nigeria’s complex security environment demands coordinated national and international responses, particularly in areas of emerging threats.
Shaibu also raised concerns over the growing impact of the digital information ecosystem on national security, warning that information warfare and malign influence operations pose serious risks to internal stability.
He called for deeper academic collaboration to study these threats and develop proactive, research-based solutions.
“We must strengthen collaboration to better understand the implications of information warfare and vulnerabilities associated with the global information space,” he stated.
In his remarks, Kent commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained commitment to partnership, noting that the Yale-NARC African Leadership Centre programme thrives on mutual knowledge exchange and shared expertise.
He said such collaborations are critical in navigating global uncertainties and strengthening collective capacity to respond to complex security challenges.
