The 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, has formally notified security agencies of plans to hold the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Durbar festivities from the Nasarawa Palace in Kano.
The notification was contained in separate letters addressed to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, and the State Director of the Department of State Services.
The letters, dated May 17, 2026, were signed by the private secretary to the Emir of Kano, Abdullahi Kwaru.
According to the correspondence, preparations had begun for the annual Sallah celebrations scheduled to commence on May 27, 2026.
The emirate said the decision to hold the Durbar followed meetings of members of the Kano Emirate Council.
“The outcome of the meetings of Kano Emirate Council members indicated the observance of Durbar festivities as provided in the attached programme,” the letter stated.
The letter described the Durbar as an important annual cultural event during which the Emir rides through the city with district heads and council members on horseback.
It added that the event allows the Emir to greet residents and receive homage from his subjects.
“Durbar festivities are annual events that enable His Highness to go round the city with his council members on horseback with royal paraphernalia to see his people and his subjects also to greet him,” the letter added.
Emirate Seeks Security Support
The emirate assured the police and DSS that the three-day event would be peaceful. It also appealed for the cooperation and support of security agencies throughout the festivities.
“While anticipating your usual cooperation and support, please accept the assurance of His Highness’ esteemed regards,” the letter stated.
Bayero’s crownship remains disputed in court after he was dethroned by the Kano State Government, which reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
