A shocking incident took place on Saturday night, 25th April 2026, at the famous Washington Hilton hotel in the United States. US President Donald Trump was sitting at the main table of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — a yearly grand event where the President meets journalists and important Washington personalities. Suddenly, around 8:30 pm (US time), gunshots were heard outside the ballroom and within seconds, Secret Service agents rushed in to take the President to safety. This was the first time Trump was attending this dinner as a sitting President.
People inside the hall got badly frightened. Many fell flat on the floor and some hid under the dinner tables. First Lady Melania Trump, Vice-President JD Vance and several Cabinet ministers were quickly moved out of the room. Thankfully, President Trump was not hurt at all. But the entire event came to a halt. By 9:40 pm, police completely shut down the dinner, even though Trump himself wanted the programme to continue.
Who is the attacker?
City officials later said that a man ran towards the ballroom entrance carrying weapons but was caught quickly by the Secret Service. The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31 years old, from Torrance in California. Surprisingly, he was a registered guest of the same hotel, meaning he had booked a room there. He was carrying a shotgun, a handgun and several knives — a very dangerous combination. Officials said he was a former tutoring teacher.
Trump described him as a “very disturbed person” and a “lone wolf” — which simply means a man acting on his own without any group’s help. The President even shared the suspect’s photo on his Truth Social account. The exact reason behind this attack is still not known.
Brave officer saved by his vest
During the encounter, one Secret Service officer was hit by a bullet, but luckily it struck his bulletproof vest and not his body. Trump praised him by saying “the vest worked” and that the officer is “doing great”. Both the officer and the suspect were rushed to a nearby hospital. The officer has now been released. The suspect, who was not injured, remains in custody.
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect will face two serious charges — using a firearm during a violent crime, and attacking a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. He will appear in court on Monday, 27th April.
Security questions raised
This incident has raised big questions about the security arrangements. Some guests said the entry checking was very relaxed and “anyone who was well dressed” could easily enter the pre-parties on different floors. Interestingly, the same Washington Hilton is the place where former US President Ronald Reagan was shot back in 1981 — so the venue itself carries a painful history.
Trump used this moment to push his old idea of building a new ballroom inside the White House, saying it would be far safer than holding such big events in hotels. He also promised that the dinner will be reorganised within the next 30 days, firmly adding, “We are not going to let anyone stop our society.”
Not the first time
This is not the first close call for Trump. During his 2024 election campaign, a bullet had grazed his ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Speaking to reporters at the White House later, Trump openly admitted that politics is “a dangerous profession” but said this attack will not stop him from “winning the war in Iran.”
Many big names were present inside the ballroom — Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, House Speaker Mike Johnson, FBI Director Kash Patel, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and Meta executive Dina Powell McCormick. Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk who was killed last year, was also among the guests.
How is a US President protected?
For the common reader, US Presidential security is like a very strong protective bubble. The Secret Service uses around 300 agents along with local police, snipers on rooftops, plainclothes officers mixing in the crowd, bomb-sniffing dogs, drones and metal detectors. About 90 per cent of the outer security is handled by local police, while the inner ring is managed by federal agents. The President’s convoy itself is fully armoured with on-the-spot medical support.
But Saturday’s incident clearly shows that even the world’s strongest security system has small gaps which need urgent closing. Trump ended his press briefing on a positive note, saying the people in the ballroom “came together” after the shock, and he thanked the media for reporting the matter in a responsible manner.
