Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has formally declared his intention to contest the Kaduna Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the former lawmaker announced the development via his verified đ handle, stating that he had obtained the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the contest.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central between 2015 and 2019, lost his re-election bid following a fallout with the then-governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The rift was fuelled by disagreements over key policies, including urban renewal initiatives, the dismissal of teachers, and the stateâs debt profile.
The dispute escalated when Sani, as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, opposed a $350 million World Bank loan sought by the Kaduna State Government.
He had warned that the loan would trap future generations in a mountain of debt.
The stance drew sharp criticism from El-Rufai, who publicly condemned Sani and other lawmakers who opposed the request.
During the 2019 primaries, Sani was initially granted an automatic ticket by the partyâs national leadership.
However, the state chapter led by El-Rufai rejected the move and held a parallel primary, which produced Uba Sani, now the incumbent governor.
Following the controversy, Sani defected to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) but failed in his senatorial bid.
Having since returned to the APC, the former senator is now seeking to reclaim his seat in the National Assembly.
