A United States-based humanitarian worker, Alex Barbir, has denied allegations that his activities and public statements have fueled violence in Nigeria.
Barbir said his advocacy is focused on protecting vulnerable communities and supporting reconstruction efforts in conflict-affected areas.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, Barbir dismissed claims that his rhetoric encourages attacks or reprisals.
“I have never once called for anybody to be murdered. I have called for people to be protected,” he said.
He explained that his message has consistently been for improved security while allowing individuals to defend themselves when under threat.
Barbir also rejected reports linking his visit to Plateau State with a reprisal attack that reportedly left two people dead.
“They had killed two people before I arrived. So it’s a false narrative to say my presence caused that,” he said.
He noted that violence in the region predates his involvement, describing it as a longstanding cycle of attacks and reprisals.
While acknowledging criticism of his position, Barbir defended calls for self-protection in areas facing persistent insecurity.
“If the government is failing to protect you, you should protect yourselves from people who would take your life. There’s nothing wrong with that,” he stated.
He added that violence in Nigeria affects both Christians and Muslims, stressing that his advocacy does not target or exclude any group.
The humanitarian worker also dismissed allegations that he is advancing foreign or political interests in Nigeria.
He challenged critics to provide evidence, explaining that his work is funded through donations, churches and humanitarian organisations.
Barbir said his work in Nigeria is carried out through initiatives such as Building Zion and Equipping the Persecuted, which focus on rebuilding communities affected by violence.
According to him, the projects include the construction of homes, schools and places of worship, particularly in Benue State.
Despite the controversy, he confirmed plans to return to Nigeria to continue his humanitarian work.
He maintained that his mission remains centred on peacebuilding and support for communities affected by violence.
