THE Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned what it described as a “gruesome” and deeply disturbing attack on residents of Jos, Plateau State, where gunmen reportedly unleashed violence on innocent civilians during Palm Sunday, leaving multiple people dead and many others injured.
In a strongly worded statement issued on March 31, 2026, and signed by its President, Afam Osigwe, the NBA described the attack as a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity across the country.
The NBA said that the timing of the assault on a sacred day marking the beginning of the Holy Week made the incident even more heartbreaking.
According to the statement, a day traditionally reserved for prayer, reflection, and hope was instead turned into one of fear, bloodshed and mourning, as families who had attended worship were thrown into grief and entire communities left shattered.
The association warned that the repeated nature of such attacks reflects a dangerous pattern of impunity, noting that the failure to bring perpetrators to justice continues to erode public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property.
It stressed that the protection of citizens remains the most fundamental responsibility of the state.
Calling for urgent intervention, the NBA urged security agencies to swiftly identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the killings.
It also called on both federal and state authorities to strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities across Plateau State and other flashpoints nationwide, while improving intelligence gathering and response mechanisms to prevent further attacks.
Beyond security measures, the association emphasized the need for justice and support for victims and their families, insisting that their suffering must not be ignored.
The NBA extended its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the people and government of Plateau State, warning that Nigeria cannot continue on a path where human life is increasingly devalued.
It further raised constitutional concerns, pointing to the continued violation of the right to life as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended).
The NBA cautioned that failure to uphold this right threatens national cohesion, weakens the rule of law and deepens insecurity across the country.
