The Senator representing Ogun Central, Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, has declared his intention to seek re-election, amid growing tension over the 2027 ticket in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Salisu said he remains committed to serving his constituents, reaffirming his “people first” approach to governance.
In a statement, the lawmaker expressed appreciation for the support from residents across Abeokuta north, Abeokuta south, Ewekoro, Ifo, Obafemi Owode and Odeda local government areas.
“To every community… you remain my reason, my strength, and my daily inspiration. Ogun Central is truly our pride, and together we are building our future,” he said.
His declaration comes against the backdrop of a controversial stakeholders’ meeting held in Abeokuta, where former governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun reportedly pushed for a consensus arrangement in the senatorial race.
At the meeting, Amosun was said to have listed some aspirants as having agreed to step down for him, a claim that immediately triggered backlash.
One of the aspirants, Muraina Banjoko, rejected the claim, insisting that no such agreement existed and that the process was still ongoing.
“We were all invited to the Ogun Central Senatorial Stakeholders’ Meeting… at no point did I agree to step down for anyone,” he said.
Banjoko added that no official decision had been taken by party leadership regarding consensus or zoning.
Reports indicated that the meeting, held at the residence of party elder and another former governor, Otunba Olusegun Osoba, was convened to deliberate on adopting a consensus candidate ahead of the APC primaries.
Amosun, however, denied asking any aspirant to withdraw from the race, saying such action would be undemocratic.
“Nowhere throughout the meeting did I request anyone to withdraw from the race for me because that would be undemocratic and unacceptable,” he said.
He explained that some aspirants had only indicated willingness to step aside if he decided to contest.
The development has heightened political tension within the Ogun APC, with multiple aspirants insisting on a transparent primary rather than a consensus arrangement.
Against this backdrop, Salisu said his mandate remains rooted in service and accountability, while reiterating his commitment to infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic empowerment across the district.
“When you first entrusted me with this mandate, I made a solemn promise to serve with purpose, integrity, and an unshakeable focus on your well-being.
“Today, I stand before you not just as your Senator, but as your partner in progress, reaffirming that every effort I make is rooted in one simple truth: People First, Always. Let the good work continue,” he said.
