THE Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, has voiced strong concern over the reported move by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to sanction broadcast presenters accused of presenting personal opinions as facts or bullying guests on air.
In a press statement issued on April 21, 2026, and signed by its President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild described the development as “dangerous and injurious to journalism,” warning that it could undermine press freedom, editorial independence and democratic accountability.
The Guild acknowledged that the NBC’s position may be driven by a desire to promote professionalism and uphold ethical standards.
However, it faulted the Commission’s statement as vague and open to multiple interpretations, cautioning that such ambiguity could lead to selective enforcement against journalists and media organisations carrying out legitimate duties.
According to the NGE, the interpretation of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly as it relates to news, current affairs and political programmes, is inherently subjective.
It warned that if the NBC assumes the role of sole arbiter of what constitutes appropriate questioning or scrutiny, it risks encouraging self-censorship and stifling legitimate journalistic inquiry.
The Guild stressed that the role of journalists, especially in broadcast interviews, is to ask probing questions, challenge inconsistencies and demand clarity in the public interest.
It argued that journalism is not meant to provide comfort to public officials or interviewees, but to hold power accountable.
With the country approaching another election cycle, the NGE emphasised the need for the media to strengthen its watchdog role.
It noted that citizens rely on the media for accurate and comprehensive information to make informed decisions, adding that this responsibility requires journalists to ask tough and, at times, uncomfortable questions.
While reaffirming the importance of professionalism and civility in broadcasting, the Guild maintained that democracy thrives on bold, responsible and fact-driven journalism, not on timidity.
It further stated that journalists are guided by ethical standards, including the principle that “comment is free, but facts are sacred,” and should not be treated as lawbreakers for carrying out their duties.
The NGE therefore called on regulatory bodies to operate within transparent and clearly defined frameworks that do not undermine media independence. It urged the NBC to demonstrate impartiality and restraint and to distinguish between genuine misconduct and the legitimate exercise of journalistic responsibility, asserting that the Nigerian press would not be intimidated.
