The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has convened a General Court Martial to try several military personnel across the Nigerian Armed Forces over an alleged coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The court-martial, one of the largest in recent years, was constituted through an official convening order issued on April 17, 2026, from the Defence Headquarters Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja.
According to Sahara Reporters, the order, signed by Major General A.M. Alechenu, stated that the tribunal was established under the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
It noted that the panel “is to assemble… for the purpose of conducting the trial of the accused persons listed.”
According to the directive, the General Court Martial is scheduled to sit at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, beginning April 23, 2026.
The court comprises senior officers drawn from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, reflecting a tri-service judicial structure.
It is chaired by Air Vice Marshal H.I. Alhaji as President, alongside members including Major Generals, Rear Admirals, and Air Vice Marshals.
A Judge Advocate, Lt Col A. Mohammed, has been appointed to provide legal oversight for the proceedings.
The convening order also outlined supporting roles, including liaison officers, prosecuting officers from all three services, a technical team, supervising officers, and a court secretariat.
The development marks one of the most extensive military trials in recent times, coming amid ongoing investigations into alleged attempts to undermine the Nigerian state.
The court-martial is expected to handle multiple cases involving personnel accused in connection with the alleged plot, as the military moves to enforce discipline and uphold constitutional order.
