THE African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has outlined the programme and institutional framework for its 2026 Annual Meetings, focusing on governance, dialogue and strategic engagement.
Speaking at a virtual pre-meetings briefing, on Thursday, Ms Chioma Onukogu, representing the bank’s Secretary General, said the meetings are statutory and serve as the highest decision-making platform.
She said that the Boards of Governors of the bank and its concessional window operated as separate entities, though closely linked in governance structure.
Onukogu said the meetings would feature key statutory sessions, including sittings of the Boards of Governors, adoption of resolutions and review of official records.
She added that subsidiary organs such as the Bureau and Joint Steering Committee would help coordinate proceedings and set the agenda.
According to her, a ceremonial handover of chairmanship will also take place, marking the transition between host countries of the Annual Meetings.
Onukogu said that a major highlight would be the Governors’ Dialogue, which provided a platform for engagement between member countries and the bank’s president.
She said the dialogue would enable governors to exchange views on strategic priorities and the bank’s future direction.
She said the meetings would also spotlight continental collaboration through the observance of Africa Day, celebrated annually on May 25.
Onukogu said the event commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union, and reflects Africa’s shared aspirations.
She added that the Africa Day event would bring together heads of government, development partners, private sector actors and civil society.
According to her, the event is designed as a high-level celebratory platform to showcase Africa’s development priorities and achievements.
The AfDB said the 2026 Annual Meetings will serve as a key forum for institutional governance, stakeholder engagement and continental dialogue.(NAN)
