Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, hosted some leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja on Monday.
Among those who visited him was Mohammed Bakin, the party’s national vice-chairman for the north-west. They met at Kwankwaso’s residence in the nation’s capital.
Reports say the the NDC leaders used the meeting to invite Kwankwaso to join their party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In recent weeks, there has been growing talk that Kwankwaso, who is linked with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), may team up with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, for the next election.
Last week, supporters of both politicians launched what they call the “OK Movement” to build support for them.
Meanwhile, the ADC is facing internal leadership problems that could affect its chances in the 2027 elections.
On April 22, the Supreme Court reserved judgement in a case involving two rival groups in the party, one led by former Senate President, David Mark and another by Nafiu Bala.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set May 30, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit their membership lists and nominate candidates.
However, some opposition parties have asked INEC to extend the deadline for party primaries to the end of July.
These parties include the ADC, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
They argue that the current timetable may put them at a disadvantage.
