A former local government chairmanship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Imo State, Collins Osuagwu, has urged former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, to reconsider any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Osuagwu, in an open letter, appealed to Atiku to support a younger presidential candidate, saying such a decision would promote national stability and strengthen his political legacy.
He said the former vice president should now embrace the role of a statesman rather than pursue another presidential bid.
‘Step aside for the younger candidate’
Osuagwu noted that Atiku had made several attempts to become Nigeria’s president since 1992, adding that his continued pursuit of the office might no longer reflect current political realities.
He described stepping aside as an act of wisdom, strength and legacy-building.
Osuagwu said, “Atiku has had a long political journey and notable achievements in public service and business. He was the Vice President from 1999 to 2007, which gave him an enduring influence in national politics.
“The former Vice President appeared on Arise TV where he was declared physically fit and mentally alert at 79. However, this moment should signal a transition into a statesman role rather than another presidential bid.
“Despite multiple attempts at the presidency since 1992, Atiku has not succeeded, suggesting that continued pursuit may no longer align with political realities. Instead, he should consider stepping aside as an act of wisdom, strength, and legacy-building.”
Osuagwu Cites Zoning, Generational Change
Osuagwu also pointed to shifting political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing the need to consider zoning and generational change.
According to him, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has growing grassroots support and a perceived electoral advantage, particularly in the southern region.
He warned that having a northern presidential candidate alongside a northern party chairman could recreate the internal tensions previously witnessed in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Osuagwu said another unsuccessful presidential bid could affect Atiku’s place in history.
He added that stepping aside could position the former vice president as a “father of democracy” in Nigeria.
“If Atiku decides to contest, the decision will have far-reaching implications, not only for Atiku’s personal legacy but also for Nigeria’s democratic future. I will urge him to act in the nation’s best interest,” he said.
