The Nigerian Army has denied allegations of torture at the 8 Division Provost Group Detention Facility in Sokoto.
The Army was reacting to claims made in a petition by Malcolm Omirhobo, which alleged maltreatment of detainees and the death of Lance Corporal Bala Hudu.
In a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Army said the allegations were misleading.
“It is necessary to correct misinformation and reaffirm our commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights,” the statement said.
The Army explained that the deceased was undergoing trial after being accused of killing a commercial motorcyclist in Katsina State in 2023.
It said the soldier had underlying health conditions and was receiving medical care.
“He had access to medical supervision, family, and legal counsel,” it stated.
According to the Army, he was admitted to hospital on April 15, 2026, and later died on April 17 due to complications from illness.
“His death was likely due to complications arising from his ailments,” it said.
The Army added that a Board of Inquiry had been set up to investigate the incident.
“The process is ongoing and transparent,” it noted.
It denied claims of torture and said its facilities comply with legal and human rights standards.
“The allegations are false and do not reflect the operations of our detention facility,” the statement added.
