Two Premier League players have been arrested in relation to an alleged rape.

The pair, both aged 19, were released on bail after being interrogated by police.

The players are from the same club, which has declined to comment on the allegations.

“Officers have arrested two men following a report of rape,” a police spokesperson said.

“A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape.

“Both men have since been released on police bail.”

According to a news report, the alleged incident occurred on Friday.

It is unclear whether the players have been suspended until the conclusion of the police inquiry.

Following high-profile instances involving top-level footballers, the Premier League made sexual consent training mandatory for players and staff in 2022.

In November, a BBC News investigation revealed that Premier League teams continued to play two footballers and keep a manager in place while being under police investigation for sexual or domestic assault.
