Oborevwori sets up committee for resettlement, rehabilitation of Okuama IDPs
The Delta State government has set up a committee to oversee the resettlement and rehabilitation of the displaced people in the Okuama community.
This was announced in a press release on Wednesday by the Delta State government.
The statement mentioned that the establishment of the Ewu IDP Management Committee “is a fulfillment of a promise by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the people of Okuama that they are not forgotten and that their well-being is a priority.”
Residents of Okuama were displaced following the invasion of the community by troops of the Nigerian army in search of those responsible for the Okuama massacre.
The invasion of the community follows the gruesome murder of 17 personnel of the Nigerian army on a peacekeeping mission in the community.
The villagers, who had abandoned their community for fear for their lives, took refuge in nearby forests.
However, “The Delta State Government this morning in Asaba took a decisive step towards healing and rebuilding the Okuama community by inaugurating the Ewu IDP Management Committee to oversee the resettlement and rehabilitation of its people,” the statement reads.
“The establishment of the IDP Management Committee is not just a plan for reconstruction; it’s a fulfillment of a promise by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the people of Okuama that they are not forgotten and that their well-being is a priority.
“The committee, which is chaired by Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, consists of other members like Chief Austin Emaduku serving as Secretary, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Hon. Festus Utuama, Hon. Ruben Izeze, Dr. Richard Kofi, Chief Oviri Uto, Olorogun Josephine Oduaran, Obukohwo Henry Ediyo, Karo Ovemeso, and Austin Ohwofaria,” the statement added.
