The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage is where legends are made, and Portugal’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Croatia delivered everything football fans could have hoped for drama, controversy, iconic veterans, and a dramatic late winner. Played before a packed crowd in Toronto, the Round of 32 clash lived up to its billing as one of the tournament’s standout encounters, with Portugal surviving a resilient Croatian challenge to book a place in the Round of 16.

For many, the match symbolized more than just a knockout fixture. It was a meeting between two footballing generations led by Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić, two icons whose international careers are drawing to a close. While neither dominated proceedings for the full 90 minutes, both left their mark on a contest that swung dramatically from one side to the other.

Portugal controlled possession from the opening whistle, circulating the ball confidently through the midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes.
