KENYA – Nicco Movers Limited has suspended a driver and conductor following public outrage over a viral video in which one of its drivers is alleged to have committed an indecent act against a female passenger.
The transport company confirmed on Thursday, July 16, that it had launched an internal investigation after becoming aware of footage circulating on social media. Watch D Video Here ➤
Both crew members were suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of the probe.
“Nicco Movers Ltd has become aware of a video circulating on social media alleging inappropriate conduct by an individual identified as one of our drivers towards a passenger,” the company said in a statement.
The firm added that the claims, which include indecent behaviour and intimidating remarks, were being treated seriously and were already under investigation.
The incident was first brought to public attention by TikTok user @Thrifts_Empire, who narrated her experience aboard a Nicco Movers matatu heading towards Nairobi’s central business district.
The woman said she was seated in the front passenger seat beside the driver, with no one else occupying that section.
She claimed the driver made repeated attempts to engage her in conversation, which she ignored by putting on her earphones.
As the vehicle neared Ngara, she alleged the driver draped a Maasai shuka over his lap and began touching himself inappropriately while still driving.
She said she covertly recorded part of the incident and confronted the driver once the matatu was caught in traffic, before alighting.
During the confrontation, the woman alleged the driver threatened her by asking whether she had not heard of women being killed and their bodies disposed of.
She further claimed that when she reported the matter to Nicco Movers management, she was met with victim-blaming instead of support.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has since written to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, urging a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations.
