THE Media Office of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi has described as false and unfounded a claim by former Minister of Sports Development and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Solomon Dalung, that Obi had not visited Plateau State since the 2023 general elections.
In a statement signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, the office said Dalung’s assertion was contrary to established facts, maintaining that Obi had made several visits to Plateau State since the 2023 elections and had spent nights in the state on two occasions.
The statement said the visits attracted widespread public attention and reflected Obi’s sustained engagement with the people of Plateau beyond electioneering activities.
According to the media office, Obi has repeatedly visited communities affected by violent attacks in Bokkos, Mangu, Bassa and Barkin Ladi to sympathise with victims and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
It stated that he had visited IDP camps in Mangu and Bokkos on several occasions, providing financial assistance, relief materials and support for clean water initiatives to affected families.
The office recalled that Obi marked his 62nd birthday in July 2023 by spending the day with displaced persons in Mangu Local Government Area instead of holding a formal celebration, describing the gesture as a demonstration of solidarity with victims of insecurity.
It further noted that Obi had consistently engaged traditional rulers, including the Gbong Gwom Jos, as well as government officials during his visits, underscoring what it described as his commitment to peace, humanitarian support and national unity.
The statement said Obi’s presence in Plateau had gone beyond politics, serving as an avenue to identify with victims of violence, interact with communities and draw national attention to the state’s security challenges.
It therefore urged the public to disregard Dalung’s claim, insisting that the allegation was inaccurate and unsupported by facts.
The statement concluded by expressing confidence that “a new and truthful Nigeria is possible.”
