Britain is set to get a new prime minister on Monday as Labour Party politician Andy Burnham officially takes over from Keir Starmer. Burnham will replace Starmer after the outgoing leader announced his resignation last month following growing pressure from within the Labour Party.

Burnham secured the support of 349 out of 401 Labour lawmakers and was elected Labour leader at a special party conference on Friday. Since Labour currently holds a majority in Parliament, its leader automatically becomes the country’s prime minister. However, Burnham will officially assume office only after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Monday. Until then, Starmer will continue as caretaker prime minister.

Why is Britain getting a new prime minister without an election?

Britain’s parliamentary system allows the ruling party to change its leader during its term without holding a general election. The new leader of the governing party automatically becomes prime minister if the party still has a majority in Parliament.

The last general election was held in 2024, and the next one is not required until 2029. This means there is no constitutional requirement for voters to return to the polls simply because the governing party has changed its leader.

Why did Keir Starmer resign?

Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader on June 22 after less than two years in office. His leadership came under criticism following several political controversies, including his decision to appoint a man with close ties to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as Britain’s ambassador to the United States.

Labour also suffered heavy losses in local elections held in May, increasing pressure from party lawmakers for him to step down. Burnham later won a special parliamentary election and emerged as the clear choice to replace Starmer. As no other candidate entered the leadership race, he became Labour leader unopposed.

What happens next?

On Monday, Starmer will deliver his farewell speech before meeting King Charles III to formally resign. Burnham will then visit Buckingham Palace, where the King will invite him to form a government in a traditional ceremony known as the “Kissing of Hands.” Afterward, Burnham will travel to 10 Downing Street, becoming Britain’s 59th prime minister and the seventh person to hold the office in the past decade.
