Once again, the danger of war is rising between the United States and Iran. But this time, no one has clearly broken a promise. The real trouble was quietly hidden inside the peace deal they signed earlier. Now, that hidden trouble is out in the open.
The biggest mistake in that deal was a wrong assumption. Both countries silently believed their military strength would stay the same after signing. But that never made sense. America wanted to slowly grow stronger. Iran wanted to freeze things exactly as they were and protect its gains. When two powerful sides pull in opposite directions, peace rarely lasts.
Let us go back to the start to understand this better. The fighting began in February, when the United States attacked Iran. America’s first goal was to remove Iran’s Islamic government. If that failed, the backup plan was to squeeze Iran hard until it agreed to tough terms. These terms would shrink Iran’s nuclear work and cut its influence across the Middle East.
But wars rarely follow the plan. Instead of weakening Iran, the fighting handed Tehran a surprising win. Iran gained strong control over the Strait of Hormuz. This is a narrow sea passage in the Gulf, and a huge share of the world’s oil passes through it every single day. If this route ever gets blocked, petrol and diesel prices can jump worldwide, and that pinch reaches your bike, your car, even your kitchen. So whoever controls this strait holds real power.
This turn was embarrassing for America. It forced Washington to sign a temporary deal called a Memorandum of Understanding, or MoU. In simple words, it was a written promise to pause the fighting.
Iran’s leaders never fully trusted this deal. To them, the MoU was just a short breather. They believed America signed it only to calm the shaky world economy, and then quietly get ready for the next round of war.
Their doubts had solid ground. According to the Financial Times, US Vice President JD Vance admitted that President Donald Trump backed the deal partly to buy time to refill America’s emergency oil stocks. Such an open confession only deepened Iran’s suspicion that this “peace” was really a trap.
Tehran began noticing several warning signs. Its money, frozen in foreign banks, was still not released. A US-backed deal between Israel and Lebanon ignored Iran’s demand for a ceasefire. America quietly moved more troops into the Gulf. And US officials pushed cargo ships to ignore Iran’s instructions and instead sail closer to Oman’s coast.
Alone, each move looked small. Put together, they looked like a clever American plan to slowly steal back Iran’s control over this vital waterway.
For Iran’s leaders, the message felt clear. If they stayed quiet or stepped back, America would only push harder. In their eyes, softness is read as weakness. So Iran chose to act boldly. It decided to restart the conflict on its own terms and force America into serious, long-term talks, talks that would give Iran both safety and economic relief.
At the centre of this whole crisis sits the Strait of Hormuz. Iran treats it like its strongest playing card and refuses to loosen its grip. As the Financial Times has highlighted, this slim waterway has become the true heart of the standoff, useful both as a weapon and as a proud symbol.
That pride grew even bigger recently. The massive crowds at the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei convinced Iran’s rulers that ordinary Iranians strongly support a firm stand here. The strait has now become a matter of national honour.
Filled with this confidence, Iran struck two oil tankers sailing near the Omani coast. America hit back hard, raining airstrikes on Iranian drone and missile bases along the Gulf.
But Iran had already prepared for this. Though war returned sooner than expected, Tehran feels the timing still suits it. Its logic is simple. If war is coming anyway, better to fight now, before America becomes fully ready and before the world economy heals from the shock to oil supplies.
Iran is convinced it is fighting for its very survival. And it believes its greatest weapon is something money cannot buy: its ability to endure pain longer than the other side.
