A passenger on board a Ryanair flight has described the horrifying moments when a man was almost pulled out of the plane after a cabin window broke loose while in the air. According to reports, the aircraft was en route from Greece to Germany. The passenger said the Serbian tourist was nearly sucked out of the plane before fellow passengers managed to pull him back into the cabin, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.
“There was a noise like a tyre bursting”
Authorities said that the man was hospitalised with friction burns but was otherwise unharmed. “Most of us had fallen asleep; we had closed our eyes. There was a noise, like a tyre bursting,” the Ryanair incident witness told Radio Thessaloniki. She further stated that the fellow passengers quickly realised there had been a decompression. “There were screams … for a moment I thought someone had accidentally opened the emergency door,” the passenger added.

“The masks dropped, and there was a strong smell. The head and shoulders of one passenger were outside the window. Fortunately, he hadn’t taken off his seat belt,” she was quoted as saying.
Fellow passengers pull the man back into the plane cabin
According to her, the passengers seated nearby helped the man and pulled him back into the plane cabin. Greek media reported the incident took place while the plane was flying over North Macedonia. The window shattered mid-air after being hit by debris that broke loose from one of the aircraft’s engines.
Ryanair confirmed that the flight returned to Thessaloniki moments after takeoff after a passenger window detached mid-air. “The aircraft landed normally, and the passengers returned to the terminal,” the airline said in a statement, adding that a replacement aircraft was arranged to fly the remaining passengers to Memmingen in Germany.

The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) described the terrifying incident as “almost a tragedy”, The Guardian reported. Meanwhile, photos and videos circulating on social media platforms reveal that the broken window led to oxygen masks dropping from the ceiling as a result of cabin depressurization.
“A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen on Friday morning returned to Thessaloniki shortly after takeoff when a passenger window dislodged in flight,” a Ryanair spokesperson said.
