Following over three years of failed attempts to curb population growth, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government is now counting on Pakistan Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. After national security and US-Iran talks mediation, Munir has found his new mandate: checking the country’s uncontrolled population growth.
Pakistani Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal said Thursday that Asim Munir has joined a committee responsible for rolling out policy reforms to keep track of the country’s population growth, Dawn reported. Kamal said that the fact that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif joined hands with the Army chief in the matter “reflects the government’s seriousness in tackling the rapid population growth”. However, he did not provide details about the exact nature of the measures that the Pakistani government might take or suggestions that Munir might have made.

Pakistan ranks fifth in the world in terms of population. The country reportedly has a growth rate of 2.55%, which the Sharif’s government had described as a “serious challenge” and “alarming”. Last year, Pakistan Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal flagged the crisis in a government meeting stating that 80% of the population was under 40 years of age, while 66% was below the age of 30. “These figures are alarming,” he said.
