Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, have reacted to Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday.
They shared their thoughts on the tournament’s final match in separate posts on their X (formerly Twitter) handles.
Spain dominated all aspects of the encounter but needed a goal in the second half of extra time to secure a deserved victory.
Ferran Torres smashed home a knockdown from Nico Williams to win the second World Cup trophy for the reigning European champions.
Reacting after the one-sided encounter, Obi described the concluded FIFA World Cup as a gallant finish and a befitting birthday gift.
The former Anambra State governor added that the tournament has further demonstrated that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail.

He wrote: “The FIFA World Cup concluded successfully today, with the best team emerging victorious. This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail.
“Today, competence, capacity, character, and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility, and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results.
“This is the spirit we must replicate across every sector of our national life. A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress, and honour to our nation.”
Similarly, President Tinubu’s aide, Onanuga, congratulated Spain on their victory over Argentina, describing the win as well-deserved.
He noted that La Roja outclassed and overwhelmed the defending champions, adding that the match statistics showed the Spanish national team were the true champions.
Taking to his verified handle, the presidential spokesperson wrote: “Congratulations to Spain. Yours is a FIFA World Cup victory richly deserved. You completely outclassed and overwhelmed the defending champions, Argentina. The statistics clearly indicated that you are the true champions. #ESPARG”
