The 3rd General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Lecture will hold at Arewa House Kaduna on July 25, 2026 in Kaduna.
According to the organizing Committee, the event is scheduled to begin at 9.00am at the venue

Gen Hassan Usman Katsina was born on 31 March 1933 in Katsina to the Fulani Royal Family of the Sullubawa clan. His father Usman Nagogo was the 48 Emir of Katsina from 1944 to 1981. His grandfather, Muhammadu Dikko was the 47 Emir of Katsina from 1906 to 1944. Hassan was educated at the prestigious Barewa College. He then proceeded to the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria.
In 1956, Hassan joined the Nigerian Army which was then under colonial control. He eventually graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army.
After Independence, Hassan Usman Katsina rose rapidly through the ranks attaining the rank of a Major in the Nigerian Army. He served meritoriously during the crisis in the Congo in the 1960’s.
On the fateful day of 15 January 1966, Major Hassan Usman Katsina was the Commander of the 1st Reccee Squadron in Kaduna when the failed coup against the elected government of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and the Northern Regional government led by the Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello took place. Although both leaders were killed by the coup plotters, their mission to form a government did not materialize. The most senior Military Officer at the time. Maj Gen Aguiyi Ironsi was made Head of State. He eventually appointed Major Hassan Usman Katsina as the Military Governor of Northern Nigeria. He was also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
It was Lt Col Hassan Usman Katsina that accepted the surrender of the coup leader. Major Nzeogwu Kaduna. He was also instrumental to the peace that followed the killings of the two northern leaders.
Lt Col Hassan Usman Katsina also had to embark on a tour of the Northern region to douse the tension brewing because of. Ironsi’s .. unification decree that turned Nigeria into a Unitary State.
