The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 8,287 nylon bags of a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud, weighing 4,143.5 kilograms, at the Apapa Seaport in Lagos.
The agency said the seized consignment, with an estimated street value of over N10.3 billion, was discovered inside a container imported from Canada during a joint examination by NDLEA officers, personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service, and other security agencies on July 10.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.
According to Babafemi, the seizure followed weeks of intelligence-led tracking and monitoring of the shipment from its point of departure in Montreal, Canada, by operatives of the NDLEA Maritime Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the Apapa Strategic Command.
He added that operatives of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) also foiled an attempt to export 2.5 kilograms of a substance suspected to be skunk, a strain of cannabis.
The illicit drug was concealed inside a gas compressor and was being shipped to Cyprus through a courier company in Lagos, he said.
Babafemi also noted that NDLEA commands and formations across the country have continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign in schools, places of worship, workplaces and communities.
He said the Chairman of the agency, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, commended officers of the DOGI and Apapa commands for the seizures and their sustained efforts to curb drug trafficking.
Marwa urged the officers and other personnel across the country to remain committed to the agency’s drug supply reduction campaign.
