The war between the United States and Iran has entered a more dangerous phase, with Iran making a series of major claims about attacks on American military assets and key shipping routes. However, many of these claims have not been independently verified.

According to Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone that was flying over Bushehr. Iranian media claimed the drone, reportedly worth around $34 million, was destroyed within moments after being targeted.

Did Iran target US military positions?

Iranian state television and Tasnim News Agency also claimed that two oil tankers caught fire after entering a minefield south of the Strait of Hormuz. Reports said the Iranian Navy had warned ships not to use the route because of the ongoing conflict. Iranian media alleged that the tankers ignored the warning before entering the dangerous area.

The IRGC further claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is now completely closed and unsafe because of US military actions. Iran also claimed to have targeted American military camps and bases in Kuwait and Jordan. According to Iranian reports, Iranian missiles struck Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base despite dozens of US air defence missiles being launched.

If the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, it could affect global oil supplies and increase energy prices worldwide.

Which Iranian cities came under attack?

As fighting continued at sea and in the air, Iranian media reported fresh US missile strikes on several locations inside Iran.

Tasnim News Agency said five powerful explosions were heard in the historic city of Yazd in central Iran. Large blasts were also reported in parts of Fars province.

Meanwhile, Mehr News Agency reported that the southwestern city of Ahvaz in Khuzestan province came under a major US missile attack. Local officials were also quoted as confirming the strike.

With missile attacks, drone interceptions and reported tanker fires taking place almost simultaneously, tensions across the Gulf region have risen sharply. The United Nations and the international community have so far failed to stop the escalation. As of now, the United States has not officially confirmed Iran’s claims regarding the drone shootdown, tanker explosions or the reported attacks on Iranian cities.
