White House steps in after Argentina’s ‘Falklands Banner Controversy’; FIFA could take big action against players ahead of final

The controversy surrounding Argentina’s Falklands Islands banner after their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final win over England has taken a new turn.

The White House has defended the Argentine players’ right to display the banner, saying it is a matter of freedom of expression. The statement comes as FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee continues to investigate the incident ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.

The issue has sparked strong reactions from both Argentina and the United Kingdom, making it one of the biggest talking points before the final.

White House supports players’ freedom of expression

The controversy was raised during a media briefing held by the White House FIFA World Cup Task Force on Friday.

The briefing mainly focused on security arrangements for the World Cup final in New Jersey and air quality concerns caused by Canadian wildfires.

However, reporters also questioned US officials about the banner displayed by Argentina’s players after their victory over England.

When asked whether the United States believed it was wrong for Argentine players to display a political message supporting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House FIFA World Cup Task Force, declined to criticise the players.

He said that the United States believes in the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech, and added that the players had the right to express their views while on American soil.

What was written on the banner?

The controversy began after Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final to reach their second consecutive FIFA World Cup final.

During the post-match celebrations, several Argentine players were seen holding a banner that read:

“Las Malvinas son Argentinas.”

Translated into English, the message means:

“The Falkland Islands belong to Argentina.”

Images of the celebration quickly spread across social media, triggering debate around the world.

Why is the Falklands issue so sensitive?

The Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina, have been at the centre of a long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

In 1982, Argentina invaded the islands, leading to a 10-week war with Britain. The conflict resulted in hundreds of deaths before British forces regained control of the territory.

While the White House has defended the players’ right to express themselves, FIFA’s tournament regulations take a different view.

According to Article 34.3 of the FIFA World Cup Match Protocols, players and team officials are prohibited from displaying political, religious or personal messages before, during or after matches.

FIFA has confirmed that its independent disciplinary committee has opened an investigation into the incident. The governing body will determine whether the Argentine players violated tournament regulations.

British leaders demand action

The incident has also drawn strong political reactions in the United Kingdom. Several British politicians have urged FIFA to suspend the Argentine players involved, arguing that political messages have no place on the football field.

However, media reports in both Spain and Argentina suggest that the players are more likely to receive warnings or financial fines rather than suspensions. A final decision from FIFA is expected after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
